Mindfulness

Mindfulness

The Mind, an instrument of thought.
The world , every moment , a note it could play.
Each note, infinite in the ways it might be played.

Do you play the same songs every day?
Or do you wander, discovering new melodies?

Do you linger,
let the song complete,
sink in,
evolve?

Or do you rush from tune to tune,
never hearing the music end?

I got this idea while reading Edward Hirsch’s How to Read a Poem and Fall in Love with Poetry. In the first chapter, Hirsch writes that a reader must be as active in understanding a poem as the poet is in creating it. You can’t simply glance at a poem and expect to grasp its meaning — you have to engage with it, working through its layers in your mind.

This struck me as a powerful metaphor for mindfulness and truly being in the moment. You can’t simply exist in the present — you have to engage with it, exploring its layers and textures in your mind.
